About Cafe 939

October 3, 2009The McLovins gave The Red Room @ Cafe 939 some lovin'

"The McLovins gave The Red Room @ Cafe 939 some lovin' when they came through Boston. Read on for words of praise as seen on their blog."

"The moon was nearly full last night in Boston as The McLovins came to town and howled. Playing their Boston debut at the fantastic Cafe 939, the band played a blistering set in front of a very receptive crowd. Cafe 939 is a music venue and coffeehouse run by students of Berklee College of Music, with capacity about 200, this state of the art room has high end sound and premium lighting equipment. For their first performance in Boston, they picked a perfect room to play."

"Lauren Caso is the Production Manager for Cafe 939 and was meticulous during the sound check and her attention to the sound contributed to what has to be the finest McLovins performance I've seen yet. This is a loud band and they frequently overwhelm smaller venues with their clamor, however Lauren and her crew staged a remarkably clean and forceful show."

"I feel The McLovins shine in these more intimate rooms, they are always loud as hell and in these settings they can just cut loose. Soon enough they won't be able to play these smaller venues, so we have to savor what we have now while we have it. Saturday night's show was just lightning in a bottle, raw and ripping from start to finish, and it'll be one I plan on revisiting over and over. "

"We wish them all the best in their travels and with High School(!) and just maybe we'll see them play at the Berklee Performance Center (berkleebpc.com) next time they're in Boston!"

About Style Boston

June 29, 2009Stuff Boston Recommends… Ryan Cabrera

“Every so often, a pop star emerges on the scene and makes us want to dig into our closet to excavate old issues of Tiger Beat and Teen, flip through the dog-eared pages, and stare at the heartthrobs that once made us swoon. Where are they now? We're not sure, but their nervous, baby-faced charm is certainly evoked by upbeat Texas hit-ster Ryan Cabrera. When he passed through Boston in 2005, Ashlee Simpson's on-again, off-again boy whipped swarms of swooning, shrieking tweens into a frenzy. Now, in promotion of his new album, The Moon Under Water, he makes an appearance at 8 p.m. at Berklee's Cafe 939 (939 Boylston Street, Boston, 617.747.6038), showing that he's grown up enough for the coffeehouse circuit. But don't let that stop you from shrieking. Get tickets ($12) at www.ticketmaster.com.”

March 3, 2009Cafe 939 gets a live review by Kier Byrnes from 'The Noise - Rock around Boston'

"…thanks to Cafe 939, a new hip venue recently opened by [Berklee College of Music], there is finally a club that allows its students to shine and show the world that there's a whole lot more to Berklee… Tonight's show is a perfect example. Zac Taylor and his buddies, the Drugs, can play astonishingly well. Fortunately, their main focus is putting together some well-crafted songs rather than playing a series of unmemorable solos. This is not to say they aren't afraid to dish out some impressive licks, but there is a whole lot more to this band. There is clever stage banter and interaction with the audience; they even bring up a horn section for the last few songs. It's a great night! Cafe 939 is mobbed and everyone is jazzed up by the music and partying like it's the weekend. I can't believe its only Tuesday!" Link

March 6, 2008Berklee Opens Cafe 939

Berklee College of Music presents Cafe 939, a state-of-the-art, all-ages, student-run music venue and coffee house.

Located at 939 Boylston Street, adjacent to the Cactus Club, Cafe 939 showcases Berklee's emerging student talent, local artists, and national acts seeking a more intimate, personal space in which to perform and connect with their fans.

Cafe 939 is open to the general public and attracts musicians and music fans from all walks of life. While most rooms in Boston have a specific musical niche, Cafe 939 embraces nearly any style, from rock, jazz, folk, and world, to bluegrass, hip-hop, electronica, avant-garde, and beyond.

"We don't care if you play the saw, accordion, or electric sitar—as long as you're good, this could be the room for you," says Jacqueline Indrisano, Cafe 939 event manager. "We want this to be a place where all are welcome and anything can happen."

The 200-person capacity concert venue, featuring high-end PA and lighting systems, video and DVD capabilities, and flexible seating, is equipped for a wide variety of performances. Music business/management majors are responsible for the booking, marketing, publicity, and promotion of all shows in this almost completely student-run operation. Berklee students also work as ushers, box office clerks, and in the stage crew

The coffee house, open for business since December 2007, features a sleek, modern design concept, a relaxed atmosphere with a number of large, comfortable sofas and chairs, and a Berklee history room with walls covered in old photographs and materials chronicling the college's past. The menu includes a variety of coffees, teas, sandwiches, paninis, salads, bagels, muffins, cakes, and other snacks.
